From the Late Bronze to the Early Iron Age in Transcaucasia and neighboring regions

Wittenberg – June 18th - 21st, 2009

International symposium hosted by the Center for Black Sea Archaeology  in cooperation with the Department of Classics, Martin-Luther-University Halle-Wittenberg (http://archaeology.altertum.uni-halle.de).

The period between the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age (i.e. from the end of the second millennium BC until the consolidation of the Urartian Kingdom in the 9th century BC) is one of the most fascinating stages of the development of archaeological cultures in Transcaucasia into which Scholars of Halle University are doing research in collaboration with other institutions in Transcaucasian field archaeology since 1994 (http://robertin.altertum.uni-halle.de/georgien/index.html; http://www.achemenet.com/document/2007.002-Knauss.pdf).
W
e would like to bring together scholars from diverse countries and to encourage cooperation as well as information exchange with archaeological and scientific research contributions to all areas of Transcaucasia in the Late Bronze and Early Iron Age – a period which calls for a comprehensive solid grounding of research discoveries.

The results of the symposium will be published in the Series of the Center of Black Sea Archaeology (Schriften des Zentrums für Archäologie und Kulturgeschichte des Schwarzmeerraumes, ed. F. Bertemes/A. Furtwängler).

All interested scholars are invited to submit an abstract (300 words) relating to archaeological excavations or surveys as well as metallurgical, climatic or geographical investigations of this period. Please give clear contact details, academic affiliation and title of paper.

Presentations at the symposium should not exceed 20 minutes and will be accepted in English, French, German and Russian.

Deadline for the submission of abstracts: November 15th, 2008.

Due to the present development in Georgia the deadline for the abstracts is extended until January 31st 2009.
